Prom Photography

The prom will last for only one night, the memories a bit longer, but the photographs will last forever. That’s why getting the best prom photographer you can is so important.

Choosing the right prom photographer

It’s a bit of a no-brainer to say that you need a photographer who doesn’t mind a lot of noise and a lot of excitement. Take the time to look at their portfolio – most have website these days. Are there any pictures from large events like weddings?  This can demonstrate that they are used to having to deal with lots of people. If all you can see are pictures of toddlers and pets taken in a studio, there might be a problem.

Prom photographers need to be flexible

There are two types of prom photographs that are a must: photos of people arriving in their grand (and sometimes crazy) prom transport, and formal shots taken during the night itself. The former needs someone who can grab great shots quickly, the latter needs a photographer who can bring out the best in people when they are posing.

Talk about where the formal shots will be taken

When you’re discussing arrangements, ask how much room they’ll need to set up equipment for the formal individual and couple shots. There is likely to be a backdrop and lighting that needs to be set up, along with room for equipment. It might be that you need to arrange to have that in another room altogether, and if so, you’ll need big signs to it so guests don’t miss their chance.

You might be able to create an area specifically for photos that incorporates your theme, with a specially designed backdrop. If you want to do this, consult the photographer first about how big an area will need to be decorated, and whether any colours might cause problems.

Pricing

When you are discussing about the price, make sure you ask about exactly what is included, and how long they can be available on the night – there will be a lot of formal shots to take. Does the quote include travel expenses, proofs etc.

Don’t forget to ask how much they will charge for copies of the individual photos – if it is too high, the prom guests might be upset.

You could ask if they would be prepared to make an album for your school library, then the prom can be admired by subsequent year groups for many years to come (and be a good giggle when fashions have moved on).
