Prom Music

Top five music tips

1. Hire a professional DJ if your budget allows.

They will have all of the latest music and will have more experience of what gets everyone on the dance floor. It also means that no-one has to worry about a sound system on the night, nor have to make sure that the music keeps playing.

2. Ask people what music they want.

Draw up a poster for every form in the year that will be attending the prom for the form room notice board. Give a big space for people to write down suggestions of particular tracks, including title and artist. Put it into the registers and ask the form tutors to announce it at registration saying something like: “Here’s your chance to have your favourite music played on the night of the prom.”

3. Ensure that a range of music is played.

From mainstream pop to alternative rock – the only thing that matters is that you can dance (or at least throw yourself around) to it.

4. Don’t leave out the slow dances.

Weddings and big parties always have a slow dance or two at the end, you might want to do the same. It’s a chance to start winding the evening down – and of course it gives the couples a chance to be close.

5. If a song bombs, move on quick!

If a song clears the dance floor, don’t keep playing the song till the bitter end – fade it out and move onto the next.
